What (who) is uteroplacental metabolism - definition

CHEMICAL PROCESS
Ethanol Metabolism; Alcohol metabolism

Drug metabolism
  • Phases I and II of the metabolism of a lipophilic xenobiotic.
BIOCHEMICAL MODIFICATION OF DRUGS OR FOREIGN COMPOUNDS BY LIVING ORGANISMS
Phase I metabolism; Phase I reaction; Phase 2 reaction; Xenobiotic metabolism; Phase 1 metabolism; Xenobiotics Biodegradation and Metabolism; Phase 1 reaction; Xenobiotic conjugation; Drug duration; Phase II metabolism; Phase (pharmacology); Metabolic stability; Conjugation (pharmacology); Conjugation (pharmacokinetics); Glycine conjugation; Glutathione conjugation; Drug Disposition
Drug metabolism is the metabolic breakdown of drugs by living organisms, usually through specialized enzymatic systems. More generally, xenobiotic metabolism (from the Greek xenos "stranger" and biotic "related to living beings") is the set of metabolic pathways that modify the chemical structure of xenobiotics, which are compounds foreign to an organism's normal biochemistry, such as any drug or poison.
Placental insufficiency
PLACENTA DISEASE THAT IS CHARACTERIZED BY INSUFFICIENT BLOOD FLOW TO THE PLACENTA DURING PREGNANCY
Uteroplacental insufficiency; Utero-placental insufficiency
Placental insufficiency or utero-placental insufficiency is the failure of the placenta to deliver sufficient nutrients to the fetus during pregnancy, and is often a result of insufficient blood flow to the placenta. The term is also sometimes used to designate late decelerations of fetal heart rate as measured by cardiotocography or an NST, even if there is no other evidence of reduced blood flow to the placenta, normal uterine blood flow rate being 600mL/min.

Ethanol metabolism

Ethanol, an alcohol found in nature and in alcoholic drinks, is metabolized through a complex catabolic metabolic pathway. In humans, several enzymes are involved in processing ethanol first into acetaldehyde and further into acetic acid and acetyl-CoA. Once acetyl-CoA is formed, it becomes a substrate for the citric acid cycle ultimately producing cellular energy and releasing water and carbon dioxide. Due to differences in enzyme presence and availability, human adults and fetuses process ethanol through different pathways. Gene variation in these enzymes can lead to variation in catalytic efficiency between individuals. The liver is the major organ that metabolizes ethanol due to its high concentration of these enzymes.
